The 6.2km Race to the Base course commences at Alley Park, travelling along streets throughout the town of Gordonvale, before heading out towards the highway south. Runners navigate their way over the cane train track prior to a slight downhill to Greenpatch. Tourists cheer on the competitors, taking a break from their camp chairs and billy tea and assist at the water station.
The Mulgrave River is crossed at the old bridge before the runners traverse a bed of rocks under the new bridge, taking them along the dirt track of the cane field headlands. Running parallel to the highway, motorists delight in sounding their horns to encourage each competitor.
Before too long, a turn to the right where runners are in awe of the Great Pyramid, taking up most of their view. Uphill towards the base, a water system at the turn-around is awaiting, which is timely.
The course is repeated in reverse back to Alley Park where locals and visitors alike are cheering the runners to the finish line!
