The Great Pyramid Race is an Endurance Race organised by The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair Association Inc. as a service to the local community.
The event – up until our 60th year in 2019 consisted of pop up stalls, entertainment and music, cultural and craft events, children’s activities, rides and amusements as a community event for Gordonvale and surrounding areas, growing every year since its inception in 1959.
2021 will bring the first year that the town of Gordonvale will celebrate the country fair as The Gordonvale Sugar Solstice in June. Allowing the community to enjoy a country fair separate from The Great Pyramid Race. Celebrating the start of the crushing season when the town is at it’s busiest supporting local businesses in the area.
As the race is getting bigger the Committee along with Gordonvale’s Chamber of Commerce and Cairns Regional Council decided the town needed two events allowing The Great Pyramid Race to grow and reach new levels of competitiveness.
The Great Pyramid Race still held on the 3rd Saturday in August will include the main event, The Great Pyramid Race & the new 1/2 Pyramid Race, as well as other sporting activities including a 6.2km Race to the Base, 1800m Juniors Race around Norman Park and The Charity race which also runs to the base of the mountain.
There will also be a small selection of stalls associated with health and fitness, healthy food options, and a few activities to keep kids and families entertained while awaiting the return of family and friends competing in events.
The event, held on the 3rd weekend in August annually, is attended by up to 5,000 spectators (local, interstate and international), making it one of the largest and most vibrant events in the region.

In 2019 the race was filmed by Peter Busoli (a Gordonvale local) who now resides in Melbourne, and Marcus and Dave who helped to cover the event. They have put together a documentary that has been taken on by SBS and will air sometime in the near future.
