Great Pyramid Race

Information for Athletes

Be advised that this is an arduous event and requires a high level of fitness.  Temperatures may exceed 30 degrees on the race day so please consider your level of fitness and suitability to compete in this race. Consider your own health in the lead up to the race. If you are unwell or have been unwell in the 2 weeks prior to the race, then consider the consequences of running on the day.

 

A Hydration backpack is COMPULSORY. You must be self-sufficient with water. Water will be supplied only in emergency situations. You will be disqualified if sighted anywhere along the track without a hydration backpack.

The Runners singlet and runners number bib must be worn at all times during the race.

Course details

 

Date: Saturday 17th August 2019
Race Start Time: 8:00am (to be confirmed – as per event program)
Check-in: 6:00am – 7:30am (to be confirmed – as per event program)
Race Briefing: 7:45am in the Runners Tent (to be confirmed – as per event program)
Time Limit: Athletes must be at the half way point up the height of the pyramid within 1:15 hour of the start time.
Athletes must have completed the event within 3 hours of the start time.
Adult Categories:

  • Junior 16-18 years
  • Open 19-39 years
  • Veteran 40-49 years
  • Masters 50-59 years
  • Seniors 60+ years

Entry Fee:

  • 12th to 17th $150.00 (cash only)

Distance: 12km, to the top of Walsh’s Pyramid
Start Line: Alley Park, Gordonvale
Turn around: Summit of Walsh’s Pyramid
Finish Line: Alley Park, Gordonvale

Participants are to enter the age category as their age on the event date.

Collection of singlets:

Collection of runner’s singlets will be available at the official runner’s registration tent at Alley Park as per Check in time, as per program.

FAILURE to wear the runner’s singlet for the event will result in disqualification and you will not be permitted to participate.

 

Check-in:

As per time in the event program: Report to the runner’s registration tent and receive your runners bib number. This bib must be worn for the entire duration of the race. FAILURE to wear your runner’s bib will result in disqualification and you will not be permitted to participate.

Course outline

  • Start behind the banner at Alley Park.
  • Run out the marked Shute onto the race track heading towards George street/Scouts hut.
  • When leaving race track follow witches’ hat onto intersection and head down George Street
  • Turn left onto Moller street
  • Turn right onto Mill Road
  • Run down and through the Green Patch area
  • Run on the old Bruce highway up to tunnels
  • Run under the highway at the first set of tunnels
  • Run on the cane headland to Moss Road
  • Proceed along Moss Road to the Pyramid car park,
  • Follow the track up the mountain, to the summit
  • At each SES check point (base, half way and summit) –SHOUT YOUR NUMBER
  • Follow the reverse route back to the finish.

Downhill runners have RIGHT OF WAY

Stay on the track always. No short cuts as this results in disqualification

Runners will be checked off by the SES at checkpoints at the base, halfway point, summit and finish line. Race Marshals will be present on the track to aid in staying on course and will be noting runners not wearing hydration backpacks.

Race rules

 

  • A Hydration backpack is COMPULSORY. You must be self- sufficient with water. You start with it and finish with it.  Water will be supplied only in emergency situations. You will be disqualified if sighted anywhere along the track without a hydration pack.
  • Please obey all marshals. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
  • There is to be NO outside assistance.  Pacing by outside persons is prohibited. This includes a non-entrant joining the race, or a person shouting instructions from a bicycle.  Anyone caught receiving outside assistance will be disqualified.
  • Personal music devises are NOT permitted to be used due to safety issues.
  • Runners MUST be at the ½ way mark up the Pyramid within an 1 hour and 15 minutes of leaving Alley Park. If you are not, you will be asked to return to the Park.
  • Runners who do not complete the full course should pass through the finish line, collect their participation medal and see finish line volunteers to inform them they didn’t complete the coarse in the allocated time. (Allocated volunteers will be there to assist in taking this information and will pass onto the SES to ensure all runners return safely)
  • Downhill runners have RIGHT OF WAY

  • Race singlet MUST be worn always. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
  • Runners will be checked off by the SES at checkpoints at the base, halfway point, summit and finish line. Marshals will be present on the track to aid in staying on coarse and will be noting runners not wearing camel packs.
  • Any protests must be lodged within 15 minutes of your return. The Committee will hear these and their decision will be final.
  • Anyone caught running on the highway will be disqualified. This is not allowed under our permit.

Participation Medal:

All athletes will receive a participation medal as you cross the finish line. In the circumstance an athlete withdraws from the race due to injury, a participation medal will be forwarded to the athlete as soon as practical after the event.

 

Number bib and Certificate:

Your runner’s bib is yours to keep and will be your certificate for participation in the event. No further certificates will be printed or emailed for this event.
